How can we recall the unrepeatable?
Singular, solitary, “one time alone,” (Derrida, Shibboleth, 3) the singular resists, forbids even, its reproduction. The event occurs but once. Each attempt at re-presentation encompasses too much, generalizes with too much facility the innumerable and banal details that gave existence to the event once and only once. The event is singular and therefore unrepeatable.
