Set in Jean Luc Goddard’s world of cynicism, sexuality and hedonism, Breathless tells the story of two young lovers who possess no real affinity with one another, yet remain bound through loneliness and desire. Placed within mid 20th century France, the film incorporates the criminal life of hood: Michel alongside the academic one of American journalist Patricia, who herself represents a new type of young female of the time. Dotted with references to existentialism & apathy as well as a constant battle within the characters’ extreme and opposing dialogue, the film succeeds in conveying a world in which it proves dangerous to dream, and even more so to trust.
