Currently reading : Nicola Costantino
Nicola Costantino (b. 1964) began her career casting sculptures from human figures. Since then, projects like Human Furriery – in which Costantino created a fetishistic collection of clothing and accessories from (synthetic yet uncanny) human flesh and hair – and Vanity – in which we observe a woman’s visage slowly transform as she applies makeup – make explicit the creepiness and bizarrity of beauty and fashion. How do we construct our identities for public consumption, and what do we destroy or willfully ignore in that process? Costantino’s newest work, a four part installation based on Eva Perón, will be revealed imminently at the Argentinian Pavilion of the 55th Venice Biennale.
