Scott Campbell – Prison Tattoo

A short documentary by Casey Neistat in which artist Scott Campbell shows how to build a make-shift, prison style tattoo gun in New York’s Thompkins Square Park. Constructing the gun using batteries, a toothbrush, a small motor he pilfers from a disguarded VHS player and a needle on a park bench, Campbell tattoos the words “Bless This Mess” – a phrase that appears in his fine art work – onto the forearm of a friend. The paired down process typical, though illegal, across prisons is reminiscent of complex the notion of association, like that seen in Alix Lambert’s 2000 documentary The Mark of Cain, from hierarchy to beliefs, a sort of microcosm of the symbolic nature of tattoo culture.
