Ninety-Two year old Whang Od, a tattoo artist of sixty-four years, speaks of her experiences of the practice. Placing emphasis on what it means now there is a need to charge for her work, with the increasing necessity of money and fall of a ‘culture of exchange’ and making a statement about the local view of tattoo, of adding beauty; “parents tattooed their daughters because it made them prettier”, a refreshingly alternative reflection of the, until recently, fairly prevalent western view of tattoo culture and the various historic and perceived associations alongside.
