Invisible Mother Photographs

The nature of the photographic process in the 19th Century meant extraodrinarily long exposure times, subjects sitting perfectly still for long periods to avoid the image blurring. This meant the only way of photographing children meant having their mothers there to hold them still, avoiding taking focus away from the children by bizarrely disguising their mothers – more often than not by crudely covering them with various sheets, rugs and curtains, but often cleverly so, leaving no more than a ghostly spectre lurking behind.
