Currently reading : Claire Barrow picks us her New Years Eve songs
Claire Barrow is the fashion designer famed for her subversive take on London’s fashion cycle and her surreal and subtle illustrations painted and printed on to leather garments. She’s also a great friend of ours at Sang Bleu with impeccable taste, so we’ve asked her to tell us the songs she’ll be welcoming in the new year with and songs which have meant something to her in 2014!
1. Kate Bush- Them Heavy People.
2014 was the year of Kate Bush and me and Ashley Williams went to see her together at the Hammersmith Apollo in September which made us cry with joy.
2. Lene Lovich – Lucky Number
This follows on well from Kate Bush because she is another wild and untamed woman, me and Reba Maybury put on a night in July called Quiet Ladies at The George and Dragon where we only played songs where women sang with unapologetic emotion, we had a fab time.
3. Screamers- Punish or Be Damned
Screamers get you dancing!
4. The Fall- Big New Prinz –
When I haven’t listened to The Fall for a couple of months I find myself rediscovering them in a whole new way!
5. Connan Mockinson – I’m The Man, that Will Find You
I was driving around Spain with my new love and listening to this song earlier this year and then in September I managed to convince Kirin J Callinan to play at my afterparty Jack Daniels put on for me after my SS15 fashion show. Kirin asked Connan to perform with him too, they played a version of Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares to You (arguably Prince did write it though…). Also the gorgeous Naomi Shimada modelled for me in that show in September who is in the video. It was all pretty good. Not quite a 2014, (released last year) but I herd it in 2014…
6. Inner City – Good Life
When Frankie Knuckles died I spent a lot of time watching his videos on YouTube and this video was always suggested as one to watch, it was great re-listetening to his work but it also re-introduced me to listening to this sort of thing.
7. You’re not alone! Olive-
Makes me feel euphoric!!
8. Rik Mayall Happy – New Year!
What more can I say?
